Baseball seasons are long enough to provide completely different looks from the same teams. The opening day matchup featured names like Rowand, Tejada, Hawpe, Ludwick and Cantu, all long gone from the teams by the time the September battle of the teams rolled around. Posey, Wilson, Sanchez, Moseley, Richard and Headley all were on the DL and unable to play in this Labor Day week matchup. The holes left behind by these players give opportunity for new players to be heroes.
For the Giants on Tuesday, two young players stepped to the forefront. First it was young 1B Brett Pill whose family was sitting a few rows in front of us. Pill blasted a home run in his first major league at bat. Although we were rooting for the Padres, we couldn't help but feel good for his family who celebrated with "I can't believe it" smiles on their faces. They spent the next couple of innings calling friends and family on their cell phones. As a baseball fan, it was really cool to watch a career launch in front of our eyes. Giants pitcher Eric Surkamp, summoned from AAA Fresno earlier that day to make his first major league start, pitched five innings and got the win for the Giants.
