After a busy weekend series against the Dodgers, it was nice to come back to a much calmer Petco Park for a weekday series against the D-backs. No Dodgers fans, a sprinkling of Arizona fans and mostly just laid back Padres fans. Ahhh...just how I like it.
I scored the game on Tuesday and it felt like I was marking "BB"s all over the place. After being down 2-0, the Padres rallied back to tie the game 2-2 and we got some free baseball. My scorebook only goes to 12 innings and I refuse to score past that so it was a good thing that the game ended after 11. Unfortunately, the tie broke with a 2-run blast by Chris Young and the D-backs remained undefeated.
Wednesday morning we woke up to rain, but by game time it was sunny and cool....perfect baseball weather. Dave bundled up like it was sub-zero temps and was peeling off layers by the first pitch. Because of the small crowd, we were able to upgrade to seats three rows behind the Padres dugout. While it is nice to be close, I get so nervous being a line drive away from having a wired jaw. Luckily, nothing came too close and I was able to get some good pics.
We sat next to two chatty cathys that didn't stop taking unless it was to get up and go to the bathroom or to go get more beer. When coming off the field around the 6th inning, Kyle Blanks tossed a ball to a kid in the row right in front of us. The ball was a little high, missing the kids glove and falling right into the lap of chatty cathy #2. She screams "I got a ball!" and holds it up for everyone to see. Did not even think about giving it to the poor kid. Classy. She got up for another bathroom visit and her friend a few rows up must have said something because when she came back she quickly gave the ball to the kid. Bet she takes candy from babies too.
After being down 1-0 most of the game, Chris Denorfia shocked everyone by hitting a two-run homerun in the bottom of the 8th to give the Padres the lead. Dave was so excited he jumped up and down and gave me a big hug. High-fives were flying around everywhere. You would have though we just won the pennant. Go crazy Padres fans, go crazy. Huston Street was given his first save opportunity of the year and came out to "Stranglehold" by Ted Nugent. The inning went 1-2-3 to give the Padres their second win on the year.
